Intravenous Antibiotic therapy is generally used for conditions that have not responded, or are not likely to respond to oral antibiotics. Some examples of conditions that might be treated with IV antibiotics include:
- Lyme disease
- Osteomyelitis
- Cellulitis
- Endocarditis
- Cystic fibrosis
Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) is an intravenous feeding therapy that can provide a client’s complete needs for calories, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals. The therapy is used when a client cannot meet their nutritional needs by eating food and cannot be fed through a tube.
Some examples of conditions that might be treated with TPN include:
- Gastrointestinal disorders
- hyperemesis gravidarum (severe morning sickness)
- cancer
Hydration is a therapy used to replace fluids lost through severe vomiting or diarrhea, or for clients who are unable to drink adequate fluids to meet their needs. Hydration is often used for clients receiving chemotherapy and for clients with hyperemesis gravidarum (severe morning sickness).
Antiemetic therapies are used to control severe nausea and vomiting. This therapy might be used for clients who are also receiving hydration therapy, including clients receiving chemotherapy and clients with hyperemesis gravidarum (severe morning sickness).
Chemotherapy is used to treat cancer. Home chemotherapy is used to treat many types of cancers.
Pain management is used for clients whose pain cannot be controlled by oral or transdermal (patch) pain medicines. Pain management is generally used for chronic cancer pain.
Steroid therapy is used to decrease the symptoms during an exacerbation of Multiple Sclerosis.
Immunoglobulin (IVIG) is used for a variety of immune disorders, including:
- primary immune deficiencies
- chronic lymphocytic leukemia
- autoimmune disorders in pregnancy
